Large wool rugs, 160x230 to 250x300

Large wool rugs measure 230 to 349 cm on their longest side, the scale that sits under a full seating area or a four to eight seater dining table with the chairs still on. Sizes run from 160 x 230 cm to 250 x 300 cm, in hand-knotted, handloom, flatweave and Kilim weaves. Wool springs back under furniture legs, so the rug holds its shape.

Choosing a large wool rug for a living or dining room

The weave decides how a big wool rug lives in the room. Hand-knotted designs are the most hard-wearing and hold up as a single long-term piece, which is usually what you want from a large wool rug. Handloom weaves feel plusher underfoot, with enough pile to soften a large open floor, though they show footprints more. Flatweaves and kilims sit lowest, so dining chairs move easily and there’s no deep pile to trap dirt across that much surface. Whichever you choose, an anti-slip underlay earns its place at this size: it cushions the pile where heavy furniture stands and keeps the rug lying flat. If 349 cm still isn’t enough for the room, see extra large wool rugs; for the same scale in other materials, see large rugs.

Frequently asked questions

A 160 x 230 cm wool rug suits a four-seat table, 200 x 300 cm wool rugs a six-seat one. Choose a wool flatweave or kilim rather than a deep pile: chairs glide more easily and crumbs lift out instead of settling into the fibres. Allow 60–70 cm beyond each side of the table so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out,

Hand-knotted wool is the most hard-wearing and the one to choose if the rug needs to last decades in a main room. Handloom wool is softer and warmer underfoot but shows footprints more across a large surface. Flatweave and kilim have the lowest profile, which makes them the easiest to keep clean at 200 x 300 cm and above.

Yes. Some shedding is normal in the first few months as loose fibres work their way out, and it’s simply more visible on a big rug because there’s more surface producing it. Vacuum regularly and it settles.

Spot-clean rather than machine wash, as wool can felt or shrink and at 230 cm and up it won’t fit a domestic machine anyway. Blot spills straight away rather than rubbing, hoover on a pile-appropriate setting. Read our cleaning guide for more information.

Rotate it every six to twelve months so sunlight and footfall are shared across the whole rug rather than wearing one strip. At large wool rug is heavy enough to be a two-person job, so it’s worth planning for. An anti-slip underlay also takes pressure off the pile under sofa and table legs.
