Green rugs

• Sage green rugs: Muted and soft, works like a neutral in most rooms.
• Olive green rugs: Another muted tone, close to sage but slightly warmer.
• Forest green rugs: Rich and saturated, reads as more of a statement colour.
• Dark green rugs: Deep and bold, works well against plainer walls and furniture.
• Emerald green rugs: Vivid and jewel-toned, best as a standout piece.
• Mint green rugs: Lighter and mid-toned shades if you want something in between.

If you have a green sofa, a neutral rug in cream, beige or grey usually works better than another bold colour, since it won’t compete with the sofa for attention. Against green walls, a plain neutral or a slightly darker green rug keeps the room feeling cohesive, while a contrasting colour like terracotta, pink or navy can lift the space if you want more of a statement. As a rule of thumb, the busier your walls or furniture already are, the plainer your green rug should be.

A small green rug works well in a compact living room, where it just needs to sit under the coffee table. For a bigger room, a large green rug lets you fit the whole seating area – sofa and chairs included – on the rug, and an extra large green rug is worth considering if the room is bigger still.

A green wool rug is durable, warm and naturally stain-resistant, making it a dependable all-rounder for busy rooms. Cotton is lighter and often machine washable, which suits kitchens and kids’ spaces.
