Washable rugs

Check the care label for specific recommendations first, then follow these general steps:

1. Shake or vacuum off loose dirt.
2. Blot spills straight away with a clean, undyed cloth and a little mild detergent – don’t rub.
3. If machine washable, use a cool, delicate cycle; otherwise hand-wash or spot-clean.
4. Skip bleach and fabric softener.
5. Air dry flat rather than tumble drying.

For most homes, cleaning every few weeks is enough to keep a washable rug looking fresh; busier rooms with pets or young children may need it more often. Blotting spills as they happen and hoovering the rug regularly will keep it going comfortably between washes.

When it comes to washable kitchen rugs, low-pile, flatweave cotton or polyester options are easiest to keep clean underfoot, since spills sit on the surface rather than soaking into a deep pile. A slimmer washable runner also fits neatly along a hallway or in front of a kitchen counter.

Yes – washable rugs are one of the most practical options for busy, pet-friendly homes, since accidents, muddy paws and spilt drinks can be cleaned up quickly rather than becoming a permanent stain. See our pet-friendly rugs guide for more advice on choosing and caring for one.

Some washable designs suit covered outdoor areas or bathrooms, but check the individual product details, as not every rug in this range is rated for damp conditions or direct weather exposure. Our washable outdoor rugs and washable bath mats are chosen specifically for these settings.

A small washable rug suits a doorway, kitchen counter or narrow hallway, while larger washable options work well anchoring a dining table or living room seating area. Round washable rugs are a good match for a breakfast nook or a compact dining spot. If you’re unsure, measure the space first and leave a little floor showing around the edges.
