Living room rugs

It depends on the room and how it’s laid out:

• Small rugs for living room (length under 160 cm): A small living room rug works well as an accent beside an armchair or under a footstool in a compact room.
• Medium rugs for living room (length 160–229 cm): Choosing a medium living room rug is usually enough to fit under a coffee table with the front legs of your sofa and armchairs resting on it.
• Large living room rugs (length 230–349 cm): A large rug for a living room anchors the whole seating area in a bigger lounge rather than just the middle of the room.
• Extra large rugs for living room (length over 350 cm): Extra large living room rugs suit an open-plan space or a room built around a large sofa.

At Rugvista, or range covers most of what a living room calls for:

• Patterns: With a huge variety of patterns — such as floral and abstract patterned rugs for living rooms — there’s plenty to choose from.
• Colours: Beyond neutral colours like grey living room rugs, you’ll find vibrant shades such as yellow and red rugs for the living room.

Rectangular rugs for living rooms suit most layouts because they mirror the shape of a typical sofa-and-coffee-table arrangement, making it easy to get every seat’s front legs on the rug. Round living room rug designs work well in front of an armchair, in a bay window, or under a round coffee table — it’s more about breaking up the room’s shape than covering the whole seating area.

Wool rugs for living rooms are the classic all-rounder: durable, warm underfoot and naturally stain-resistant. Jute designs bring natural texture and suit calmer, lower-traffic areas. If the room gets heavy use from kids, pets or muddy shoes, a washable living room rug is the practical choice, since they can go straight in the machine.

In an open-plan or larger room, aim to get the front legs of every sofa and chair resting on the rug so the seating area reads as one zone. In a smaller room, placing the rug centrally under the coffee table with a border of bare floor around it can feel less crowded than covering the room wall to wall.

A single large living room rug is usually the better choice for anchoring an entire space, since it lets the front legs of your sofa and chairs sit on one continuous surface and reads as one confident piece. Multiple smaller living room rugs can work in a big open-plan space to zone a reading corner or seating group separately, but they need to sit in similar tones or the room can start to look patchy.

A low pile rug for the living room is easier to hoover and tends to hold up better in busy, high-traffic rooms. High pile or shaggy living room rugs feel softer and cosier underfoot. They work well in a quieter lounge but need more regular grooming to stay looking full. Neither is wrong, it’s a trade-off between comfort and upkeep.
