Searching for a unique addition to your home? Handmade silk carpets will create a dramatic focal point in larger spaces. However, they can also be used more subtly.

Need to coordinate with a more muted colour palette? Use a beige silk rug to complement neutral wall tones. If you’ve icy shades to decorate your interiors, a blue silk rug is a great choice.

What are silk rugs?

Silk has been used to produce rugs for thousands of years. This premium material was commonly used in China before being later exported along the Silk Road. In subsequent centuries, countries like Turkey and India all began producing silk carpets.

A traditional silk rug is made by hand, with individual silk fibres producing incredibly intricate patterns that can’t be achieved with any other material. Because of their unique woven construction, silk carpets are generally very pliable and soft to the touch.

What are the benefits of silk rugs?

Silk is a durable and hard-wearing fibre that lasts for a long time. What’s more, it only becomes more beautiful over the years. Silk rugs are thin and light, leaving them with a shimmering lustre that exudes luxury. Silk can bleach or lose some of its colour when exposed to UV rays and high temperatures, so avoid placing rugs in direct sunlight or near heat sources.

While dyes can fade over time, this only enhances the innate beauty of a silk carpet. As well as being a practical addition to your floors, they’re also highly decorative pieces in their own right.

How to clean and care for a silk rug

Although silk is surprisingly durable, you need to be careful when cleaning a rug made from this material. Keep a silk carpet looking its best by going over it regularly with a hoover. However, avoid using brush attachments too rigorously as this can damage the fibres.

To get rid of any trapped dirt or dust, it’s a good idea to take your silk carpet and shake off any excess debris. Use a dry clean cloth to absorb any spills as soon as they occur. For best results, call in a professional cleaner to deal with those stubborn stains.

Effortlessly elegant and incredibly durable, silk rugs are one of the best investments you can make if you’re looking to upgrade your interior design. Showcasing unrivalled levels of craftsmanship, they’ll make a sophisticated addition to any room.
