MamlukHand KnottedRug

Brown / Yellow309 x 413 cm

Mamluk rugs trace their historical origins back to the Mamluk Sultanate of Cairo, where they were first woven centuries ago. Over time, this distinctive design tradition migrated across borders, with contemporary weavers in Afghanistan keeping the classic style alive today.

The hand-knotted technique used to create this piece is one of the oldest textile traditions in the world. By tying individual knots onto a vertical loom, weavers create a dense pile that is highly resistant to wear, allowing the complex patterns to remain sharp and clear over years of use.

The visual language of Mamluk rugs is defined by its complex geometry, featuring a central octagonal medallion surrounded by smaller geometric compartments. This layout creates a balanced sense of order and symmetry, accented by intricate decorative borders that frame the central field.

Owning a Mamluk rug connects your home to a rich lineage of design history. Highly valued by collectors for their complex layouts and cultural significance, these rugs are appreciated as enduring examples of weaver expertise and artistic dedication.

This rug is hand knotted by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, a process requiring patience, precision, and deep-rooted craft knowledge. Every knot is placed individually by hand, creating a structure that is far more durable and resilient than any machine-made alternative.

With a substantial weight of 51 kg and generous dimensions of 413 x 309 cm, the rug represents a significant investment of time and physical effort. This weight reflects the density of the wool used, ensuring the rug lies flat and secure on your floor while offering excellent longevity.
