MamlukHand KnottedRug

Orange / Dark grey268 x 362 cm

Mamluk rugs trace their historical roots back to the Cairo sultanate of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Known for their complex, kaleidoscopic designs, these rugs were highly prized trade goods across the Mediterranean and Europe, celebrated for their distinctive geometric harmony.

The design of a Mamluk rug is characterised by a complex central medallion surrounded by smaller geometric forms, creating a sense of infinite symmetry. This intricate layout requires the weaver to follow a highly detailed mental map, ensuring every small shape aligns with the overall geometric structure.

This contemporary interpretation from Afghanistan showcases a beautiful teal field accented with orange, beige, and purple details. While traditional Mamluk rugs often favoured deep reds and blues, this modern colour palette brings out the geometric details in a fresh way, highlighting the timeless appeal of the pattern.

Acquiring a Mamluk rug means bringing a piece of design history into your home. The combination of historical design principles and contemporary Afghan weaving expertise results in a rug that is both a functional floor covering and a conversation piece with deep cultural roots.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a traditional technique that requires immense patience, skill, and hours of concentrated human effort. Every single knot is tied individually by hand, creating a robust and resilient structure that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.

With a generous size of 362 by 268 cm and a substantial weight of 38.8 kg, this piece demonstrates a very dense and sturdy construction. The sheer volume of wool used in its creation ensures a heavy, grounded rug that sits firmly on the floor and offers excellent insulation and sound dampening.
