Modern rugs

If your home decor needs a helping hand, modern rugs make uplifting your interiors easy. Some feature simple motifs and muted colourways, while others boast abstract designs in an assortment of eye-catching shades.

A modern grey rug makes a fine addition to a contemporary living space, while a multicoloured one will breathe new life into neutral-inspired decor schemes. Large rugs are ideal for open-plan arrangements or roomy living spaces, while round ones are perfect for adding texture to awkward layouts.

What are modern rugs?

Modern carpets come in a variety of dramatic designs. Some are simple two-colour styles, making them a great idea for tonal decor schemes. Others take their inspiration from the world of art and architecture.

What makes living room rugs modern? Some feature slanted lines, bold curves and repeated patterns that create visual interest. Others take a more low-key approach. A modern black and white rug is an effective choice in rooms decked out with monochromatic colours.

How do I choose the right modern rug for my space?

There’s a lot to consider when choosing a modern rug. First, think about where you’ll be positioning it. Modern kitchen rugs can add drama to your cooking space, but it’s best to stick with hard-wearing synthetic like plastic or recycled polyester (PET) for easy maintenance. Natural fibres like cotton and jute are also good choices.

If you’re after comfort, choose a deep-pile carpet made from organic materials like wool or silk. For busier areas of the home, choose a flat-woven design made from something like jute.

Size and shape are also important. Use a large rug to define zones in an open-plan space or anchor your furniture. A modern round rug can also work well in rooms with non-standard layouts.

How do I clean and care for my modern rug?

To keep your rug in great condition, hoover it regularly to get rid of dust, dirt and pet dander. For deep piles and fringed edges, use the upholstery attachment. If your carpet is stained from a spillage, spot-clean the area as quickly as possible. Dampen a clean white cloth in cold water and gently dab the stain. If this doesn’t shift it, it’s best to call in a professional. To make life easier, consider investing in machine-washable rugs.

If your floors are calling out for a touch of character, make a statement with modern rugs. Keep it simple with black and white designs, or use abstract-inspired ones to introduce a splash of colour to your interiors.
