Brown / Black196 x 315 cm

Tabriz rugs originate from one of the oldest rug-weaving centres in the Middle East, located in the historic city of Tabriz. This region has been a vibrant hub of artistic exchange for centuries, positioned at a crucial junction on the ancient trade routes. The rugs produced here are renowned for their incredible diversity of design and their ability to incorporate both traditional and innovative aesthetic elements.

The term 40 Raj refers to a specific technical standard of knot density, which serves as a measure of quality for Tabriz rugs. In this tradition, the 'Raj' is a count of knots per a specific width, and a 40 Raj designation indicates a high level of precision. This technical rigour ensures that the resulting rug is not only aesthetically refined but also exceptionally durable, providing a dense, lustrous pile that ages gracefully over time.

Design-wise, Tabriz rugs are celebrated for their sophisticated use of motifs, often featuring a central medallion surrounded by lush, flowing floral patterns and highly detailed borders. These designs are deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the region, reflecting a long-standing appreciation for symmetry and balance. The use of vibrant colours, often set against a deep, contrasting field, makes these rugs instantly recognisable to collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Owning a Tabriz 40 Raj is an investment in cultural heritage and artisanal skill. These pieces are highly valued because they represent the pinnacle of a craft that has been passed down through generations of families. By choosing such a rug, you are preserving the legacy of Middle Eastern weaving and bringing a piece of history into your modern home, adding a layer of depth and authenticity that only a hand-knotted, traditional rug can provide.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense skill and dedication from master weavers. By manually tying each individual strand of wool, the artisan creates a surface of remarkable density and structural integrity, ensuring the rug can withstand the demands of a busy home while maintaining its appearance for years to come.

With a density of 360,000 knots per m2, the pattern achieves an extraordinary level of clarity and precision. Given the size of 315 x 196 cm, this equates to over 2.2 million individual knots, a feat of human labour that takes many months of focused work to complete. This high knot count is the hallmark of fine craftsmanship, resulting in a firm, resilient pile and a level of detail that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.

The combination of the heavy, durable wool pile and the sturdy cotton foundation demonstrates the expert balance of materials. Weighing 27.8 kg, the rug carries a substantial quality that confirms the density of its weave. This weight is a direct result of the generous amount of material and the intensive time invested in the knotting process, justifying its status as a premium investment for your home.
