Pakistan Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown63 x 85 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a historic hub for trade and textile arts. While the style originated in this region, the finest examples today are primarily woven in Pakistan, where artisans have refined the tradition over generations to produce exceptional pieces.

The term 3ply refers to the construction of the pile, where three strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted. This technical choice is significant because it results in a much thicker, more lustrous, and durable pile compared to single or double-ply construction, ensuring the rug feels substantial and lasts for many years.

Signature design elements of the Bokhara style include a field filled with repeating gul motifs, which are often octagonal or elephant-foot shapes arranged in orderly rows. These are typically surrounded by a formal, decorative border, creating a balanced and harmonious aesthetic that is instantly recognisable to collectors and enthusiasts.

Owning a hand-knotted rug from this tradition is an investment in cultural heritage and skill. These rugs are highly valued for their consistent quality and the immense human effort required to create them, making them prized possessions that add a sense of history and permanence to any contemporary home.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate significant time to ensure every detail is perfect. With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the creation of this piece requires immense precision and concentration, as every individual knot is placed by hand to achieve the desired pattern clarity and structural integrity.

The density of the knotting directly influences the rug's quality, resulting in a firm, resilient pile that stands up to daily use. This level of craftsmanship is a testament to the artisan's expertise, requiring weeks of focused work to complete a piece of this size and complexity.

The foundation, crafted from strong cotton, supports the dense wool pile, ensuring the rug keeps its shape over time. This combination of materials and hand-knotted technique creates a durable, high-quality object that justifies the time and effort invested in its creation.
