Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark grey77 x 120 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, once a major trading hub for textiles and carpets. While the design tradition originated there, the finest examples of these rugs are today masterfully woven in Pakistan, where the craft has been refined over generations to achieve incredible consistency and quality.

The term 2ply refers to the construction of the yarn, where two individual strands of wool are twisted together before the knotting process begins. This technique is essential for creating a pile that is not only denser and more lustrous but also significantly more durable. It provides the rug with a substantial feel and a depth of colour that single-ply yarns cannot achieve.

Signature design elements of the Bokhara style include the repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot shaped medallions arranged in orderly, rhythmic rows across the field. These are typically framed by elaborate, geometric borders that echo the motifs in the centre. This particular rug honours these traditions while presenting them with a crisp, clean layout that feels both timeless and intentional.

Owning a Bokhara rug is a connection to a long-standing heritage of weaving skill. These rugs are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their blend of technical precision and cultural resonance. To bring one into your home is to appreciate the dedication of the artisans who preserve these patterns, ensuring they remain a living part of our interior design landscape.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a process that requires immense patience and precision. With a knot density of 360,000 knots per m2, the creation of this 120 x 77 cm rug involves hundreds of thousands of individual, hand-tied knots, a labour-intensive journey that ensures the final piece is both robust and finely detailed.

The investment of time and human skill required for this level of density is what gives the rug its superior pile quality and sharp, clear design elements. Every knot contributes to the structural integrity of the piece, resulting in a durable floor covering that is built to withstand the demands of daily life while retaining its refined appearance.
