Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black63 x 97 cm

The Bokhara rug tradition is deeply rooted in the history of Central Asian nomadic tribes, though the finest contemporary examples are masterfully woven in Pakistan. These rugs draw their inspiration from the ancient Silk Road, evolving through centuries of cultural exchange and artistic refinement to become the beloved treasures they are today.

The term 2ply refers to the specialised technique of twisting two strands of Wool together before they are knotted into the foundation. This method is vital for quality, as it results in a pile that is significantly more lustrous, dense, and durable than single-ply alternatives. It provides a tactile richness that is both beautiful to look at and soft to the touch.

Signature design elements of the Bokhara include the repeating gul motif, which often appears as octagonal or diamond-shaped medallions. These symbols are traditionally organised in structured rows, framed by intricate borders that reflect geometric precision. The balance between the field and the border is a hallmark of this style, offering a sense of order and visual interest.

Owning a hand-knotted piece from this tradition is about more than just decor; it is about preserving a craft that has been passed down through generations. These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their cultural significance and the immense human effort required to create them. They represent a connection to a long-standing heritage of beauty and skill.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate significant time and focus to every detail of the construction. With a density of 360,000 knots per m2, the precision involved in its creation is remarkable. This high knot count is essential for achieving the sharp, clear pattern definition and the dense, luxurious pile that defines this piece.

Creating a rug of this size and complexity requires months of steady, experienced work. The artisans carefully knot each individual thread, a labour-intensive process that builds a robust and durable foundation. This commitment to traditional techniques ensures a level of quality and structural integrity that simply cannot be replicated by machines.

By investing in this hand-knotted piece, you are supporting a legacy of craft that prioritises patience and skill above all else. The weight of 1.5 kg for this 97 x 63 cm piece highlights the generous amount of high-quality material used, further proving the effort and care poured into its long-lasting construction.
