Dark green / Dark yellow196 x 204 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the historic Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a legendary hub for trade and craftsmanship. While the designs have ancient roots in nomadic traditions, the finest examples today are woven in Pakistan. This evolution reflects the migration of weaving techniques across the region, where artisans have refined these classic patterns to achieve a level of consistency and softness that is highly prized today.

The term 2ply refers to the construction of the pile, where two strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted into the foundation. This technique is significant because it creates a thicker, more lustrous, and remarkably resilient pile compared to single-ply alternatives. For the owner, this translates into a rug that feels softer and richer, while maintaining its structural integrity against daily use.

Signature design elements of this tradition include the iconic gul motifs, which are repeating octagonal or diamond-shaped medallions arranged in rows across the field. These patterns are typically framed by elaborate, formal borders that mirror the symmetry of the central design. The use of a soft green field in this specific piece is a beautiful variation that highlights the intricate details of the traditional motifs, making it a standout example of the style.

Rugs from this tradition are widely collected for their combination of cultural heritage and technical precision. Owning one is an opportunity to connect with a long-standing history of textile art where skill is passed down through generations. These rugs are valued not only for their visual beauty but for the lasting quality that comes from a tradition that refuses to compromise on the integrity of the finished work.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by artisans who dedicate countless hours to ensure every detail is precise. With a density of 360,000 knots per m2, the construction process is incredibly labour-intensive. This high knot count is the hallmark of a premium rug, providing the sharpness of the pattern and the density of the pile that you can feel underfoot.

The process of hand-knotting a rug of this size and complexity takes months of focused effort. Each knot is tied individually, creating a robust structure that gives the rug its exceptional durability and resistance to wear. By investing in this piece, you are supporting a time-honoured craft and the human skill required to produce a textile of this calibre.

The substantial weight of 10 kg across its 204 x 196 cm surface is direct evidence of the generous amount of material used during production. This weight contributes to the rug's stable presence on your floor, ensuring it stays in place and feels substantial. The combination of dense knotting and high material usage results in a finished product that is crafted to endure.
