NajafabadHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black286 x 440 cm

The Najafabad rug hails from the historic city of Najafabad, located in the Isfahan province of the Middle East. This region has long been recognised as a centre of exceptional weaving traditions, where the craft is deeply woven into the local culture and history.

These rugs are celebrated for their technical excellence, often utilising a sturdy cotton foundation that provides the necessary stability for the dense wool pile. This combination of materials is a hallmark of the region's approach to longevity, ensuring that the rugs remain resilient and maintain their structural integrity over time.

The signature design of a Najafabad rug typically revolves around a central medallion, often accompanied by a complex network of Shah Abbasi floral motifs and intricate arabesques. The use of deep red and blue tones is traditional, providing a striking contrast that highlights the fineness of the pattern work.

Collecting a rug from this tradition is an acquisition of cultural heritage. Because each rug is individually crafted, it stands as a testament to the skill of the artisan and the enduring legacy of Middle Eastern textile arts, making it a cherished centrepiece for any home.

This rug is expertly hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that ensures every strand of wool is securely tied to the foundation. This method creates a highly durable structure, resulting in a pile that maintains its shape and beauty even after years of daily use.

With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the level of precision required is immense. This high knot count allows for the sharp, clear rendering of the rug's complex floral patterns, while simultaneously providing a dense, resilient surface that can withstand the demands of a busy household.

The weight of 44 kg is a testament to the sheer amount of quality material and human effort invested in its creation. A rug of this size and density reflects months of dedicated work by skilled artisans, ensuring that each piece is not only a functional floor covering but a lasting investment in craft.
