Najafabad rugs originate from the historic city of Najafabad, located in the central region of the Middle East. This area has long been recognised for its deep-rooted weaving traditions, which emphasise the creation of durable and visually captivating floor coverings designed for family life.

The defining characteristic of these rugs is their construction. The term Najafabad refers to a specific regional approach to knotting, which often results in a sturdy, reliable pile. This technique is highly valued for its ability to produce rugs that remain both soft and resilient, ensuring they provide a comfortable surface while standing up to the demands of a busy household.

Visually, these rugs are celebrated for their sophisticated floral motifs and balanced compositions. They typically feature a large, central medallion surrounded by a field of densely packed, flowing vines and blossoms, often framed by ornate borders. The colour palettes are traditionally rich and bold, using deep reds and dark blues to create a look that is both dramatic and harmonious.

Collectors value Najafabad rugs for their combination of artistic beauty and practical longevity. Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in a storied craft that has remained relevant for decades. It represents a commitment to supporting heritage skills and bringing a piece of cultural history into the modern home.

This rug is created through a traditional hand-knotted process, requiring significant skill and patience. Each individual knot is tied by hand, a labour-intensive method that ensures the pattern remains sharp and the pile stays firmly in place.

Given the substantial weight of 28.6 kg across its 8.18 m2 surface, this rug displays a robust construction that speaks to the quality of the materials used. The significant density of the weave is a direct result of the hours of dedicated effort invested by the artisan.

The precision required to execute such a complex floral design reflects a mastery of craft passed down through generations. Because every section is tied manually, the resulting structure is far more durable than machine-made alternatives, promising a floor covering that is built to withstand the rhythms of daily life.
