MoudHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black98 x 147 cm

The Moud rug originates from the town of Moud, located in the Khorasan province of the Middle East. This region has a deep-rooted tradition of weaving that spans centuries, known for producing rugs that are highly regarded for their durability and sophisticated, balanced designs.

Moud rugs are celebrated for their distinctive floral and geometric compositions. They often feature a central medallion surrounded by a field of repeating floral motifs, sometimes known as the Herati pattern, which creates a harmonious and rhythmic visual flow across the surface of the rug.

A key characteristic of these rugs is the use of a formal, often multi-layered border that frames the central field perfectly. The colour palettes typically lean towards rich, earthy tones accented with deep reds and blues, which are achieved through traditional dyeing methods that have been refined over generations to ensure long-lasting colour vibrancy.

Collectors value Moud rugs not only for their beauty but for the consistent quality of their construction. Owning a rug from this tradition is an investment in cultural heritage, representing a legacy of skill that continues to be passed down through families of weavers who maintain the high standards of their ancestors.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and skill from the artisan. With a density of 360,000 knots per m2, the creation of this 1.44 m2 piece involves over 500,000 individual hand-tied knots, a testament to the dedication required to achieve such a refined result.

The craftsmanship is further highlighted by its substantial weight of 5.3 kg, which reflects the generous use of premium materials and a tight, robust foundation. This weight is a clear indicator of the rug's density and the significant time invested in ensuring a high-quality, long-lasting product.

Every knot is placed with intent, ensuring that the elaborate patterns remain sharp and consistent across the entire surface. This meticulous attention to detail is what sets hand-knotted rugs apart, providing a level of structural integrity and aesthetic depth that mass-produced alternatives simply cannot match.
