KunduzHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black91 x 146 cm

Kunduz rugs originate from the northern region of Afghanistan, a territory renowned for its rich history of weaving and textile arts. The town of Kunduz has long served as a vital trading hub where different nomadic and settled cultures met, exchanging patterns and techniques.

The weaving tradition in this region is characterised by the use of deep, lustrous red dyes and dense geometric patterns. These designs have been passed down through generations of weavers, with each family or group adding their own subtle variations to the classic layouts.

The signature look of a Kunduz rug features repeating medallions, often referred to as guls, which are framed by multiple borders. These patterns are deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the region, symbolising protection, prosperity, and connection to the land.

Owning a Kunduz rug means acquiring a piece of living history. These rugs are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their cultural weight, expressive designs, and the enduring quality that only traditional Afghan weaving can deliver.

This rug is entirely handmade using traditional hand-knotting techniques, a process that requires immense patience and skill. Every single knot is placed by hand, creating a dense and durable structure that ensures the rug will withstand daily use while maintaining its beauty.

With a weight of 4 kg and dimensions of 146 x 91 cm, the substantial feel of this piece reflects the volume of natural wool hand-knotted into its construction. This density of material contributes to its excellent stability on the floor and its long-lasting quality.

The human effort involved in hand-weaving a rug of this scale is significant, requiring weeks of focused work. This dedication to craft is what gives the rug its unique character, making it a premium addition to your home.
