Brown / Black197 x 287 cm

Kunduz rugs trace their roots to the fertile northern region of Afghanistan, where nomadic and village weaving traditions have flourished for generations. Artisans in this area draw upon a rich heritage of design, blending local motifs with techniques influenced by neighbouring Central Asian cultures along historic trade routes.

The craft relies on skilled hands working at vertical looms, where weavers translate traditional patterns into tangible textiles. This region is particularly known for producing sturdy carpets that balance decorative appeal with practical durability for everyday living.

The visual language of Kunduz rugs typically features repeating geometric medallions, such as gul motifs, framed by structured borders. Deep red tones often dominate the background, accented by contrasting shades that create a balanced and harmonious composition.

Collecting a Kunduz rug means bringing home a tangible piece of Middle Eastern textile heritage. These handmade creations are valued for their authentic craftsmanship and the cultural continuity they represent, offering lasting quality that connects modern homes to centuries-old traditions.

This Kunduz rug was brought to life entirely by hand through a traditional knotting technique. Artisans spend months meticulously tying individual strands onto the foundation, requiring immense focus and steady hands to maintain uniform tension across the entire surface.

With a knot density of 160,000 knots per m2, the total count reaches approximately 905,000 individual knots. Creating a piece of this scale and density demands a significant investment of time and human effort, reflecting generations of refined craft knowledge passed down through families.

Weighing 17 kg, the dense construction relies on a sturdy foundation and generous wool pile. This substantial weight signals the high volume of natural material and labour invested in the making, ensuring a durable rug built to withstand everyday life.
