KunduzHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black105 x 149 cm

The Kunduz rug tradition originates from the northern Afghan city of Kunduz, an important trading hub situated along historic caravan routes near the Kunduz River.

Weavers in this region draw upon centuries of Central Asian and Middle Eastern design heritage, adapting ancient motifs into distinctive regional styles that reflect local tribal identities and nomadic storytelling.

Hand-knotted Kunduz carpets are renowned for their robust construction, traditionally utilising sturdy wool foundations and tight knotting techniques passed down through generations.

This time-honoured method ensures the pile remains upright and resilient, making these rugs exceptionally durable against heavy foot traffic while developing a beautiful patina over time.

The visual language of Kunduz rugs typically features striking geometric medallions, repeated guls, and deeply symbolic tribal patterns framed by intricate borders.

Deep red tones often dominate the field, complemented by contrasting accents in navy, beige, and green that create a balanced, harmonious composition full of visual depth.

Collectors and interior enthusiasts highly value Kunduz rugs for their authentic cultural weight and unhurried craftsmanship.

Owning one of these pieces is a way to preserve a living textile tradition, bringing a tangible connection to the skilled hands and ancient artistry of Afghan weavers directly into your daily life.

This rug is meticulously crafted using a traditional hand-knotted technique, representing weeks of careful human labour and deep artisan expertise.

Weavers tie individual knots by hand onto the foundation, ensuring every square centimetre is packed with durable structure and precise detail.

With a high knot count of 90,000 knots per square metre, you get a remarkably crisp pattern definition, a dense pile that resists crushing, and lasting structural integrity.

Across its 149 x 105 cm dimensions, this piece contains approximately 140,835 individually tied knots that require months of dedicated work.

The substantial weight of 4.7 kg further reflects the dense quality of the materials and the rigorous construction process invested into the foundation.

This intensive hand-knotting process guarantees that the rug lies flat, resists shedding, and maintains its premium feel for many decades to come.
