Kilim SuzaniHand WovenRug

Green / Dark red152 x 197 cm

Kelim rugs have long been a cornerstone of nomadic life across the Middle East and Central Asia. Originally designed as functional, portable floor coverings, these flat-woven pieces are defined by their lack of a raised pile. The tradition of weaving them is deeply rooted in the history of the Silk Road, where techniques and design influences travelled between regions, evolving into the distinct styles we recognise today.

The term 'Kelim' refers to the specific slit-weave technique used to create the intricate patterns. By interlocking the weft threads tightly around the warp, weavers create crisp, sharp geometric designs that remain stable and strong. This method is highly valued for its ability to produce lightweight yet incredibly durable textiles that can withstand the rigours of both floor use and wall hanging.

The design of this specific rug draws on the rich visual language of Afghan tribal weaving. You will notice the repetition of symbolic medallions and tribal motifs, which often serve as a visual narrative for the weaver's community. These patterns are not merely decorative but are imbued with meanings related to protection, fertility, and the natural world, making each rug a tapestry of cultural storytelling.

Collecting a Kelim is an investment in a living heritage. These rugs are celebrated for their ability to bridge the gap between ancient tradition and modern home decor. By bringing a piece like this into your home, you are preserving a legacy of craftsmanship that has survived for centuries, honouring the individual skill and regional pride embedded in every thread.

This Kelim is meticulously hand-woven by skilled artisans, a process that requires patience, focus, and a deep understanding of traditional techniques passed down through generations. Unlike machine-made rugs, every inch of this piece reflects the human element, resulting in a subtle, organic texture that gives the rug its authentic character.

With a weight of 6 kg for its 197 x 152 cm size, this rug demonstrates a high density of material that speaks to its quality and durability. The labour-intensive nature of hand-weaving means that creating a piece like this requires significant time, with each geometric motif and border detail carefully integrated into the foundation by the weaver.

The strength of the construction ensures that this rug is not only beautiful but also built to handle the demands of everyday life. By choosing a hand-woven Kelim, you are supporting a craft tradition that prioritises longevity and precision, ensuring that the rug maintains its structure and vibrancy even after years of use in your home.
