Kilim ModernHand WovenRug

Brown / Dark grey147 x 202 cm

Kelim weaving has deep roots across the Middle East, where nomadic and village communities traditionally created flatwoven textiles for everyday use as floor coverings, blankets, and storage bags. Over generations, these utilitarian textiles evolved into prized decorative pieces known for their striking geometric language.

Unlike pile rugs, traditional kelims are woven without knots. Instead, the coloured weft threads are tightly packed down to cover the warp completely, a technique known as slit-weave construction. This creates a lightweight, reversible textile that lies flat and holds up remarkably well to everyday movement.

The design of this piece features dynamic, undulating bands of varied hues that recall traditional stripe motifs interpreted through a modern artistic lens. The interplay of vibrant tones creates a lively rhythm across the surface, making it adaptable to contemporary and eclectic interiors alike.

Owning a handmade kelim connects your home to a rich lineage of textile artistry. Each piece preserves ancient skills passed down through families, offering a meaningful way to bring authentic craft and cultural heritage into modern living spaces.

This rug is entirely handmade through traditional hand-weaving techniques, a craft that requires patience, precision, and a steady hand. Without the aid of machinery, the weaver interlaces the colourful wool weft strands tightly over the warp threads to build the distinctive flat surface.

Weighing 5.9 kg across a 202 x 147 cm area, the dense construction reflects a substantial investment of time and human labour. Achieving clean lines and consistent tension across such a wide expanse demands expert control, resulting in a durable flatweave built to last.

The creation of this piece represents weeks of dedicated handwork by skilled artisans, ensuring that every centimetre carries the authentic touch of traditional craftsmanship and long-standing weaving heritage.
