Hamadan Shahrbaf ca. 1940Hand KnottedRug

Dark red / Beige130 x 192 cm

Hamadan, situated in the western part of Persia, is one of the oldest and most prolific rug-producing regions in the world. The craft here is deeply rooted in local village traditions, where families have woven stories into wool for centuries, adapting motifs from neighbouring nomadic tribes and urban workshops alike.

The Shahrbaf designation points to a specific standard of urban and workshop production associated with the region, known for maintaining high structural integrity and disciplined designs. The use of a dense pile provides both durability and a soft tactile quality that has made these vintage pieces enduringly popular among collectors.

This particular rug showcases classic regional design elements, including balanced central motifs and carefully structured floral borders filled with traditional botanical imagery. The harmonious interplay of rich red and soft neutral tones reflects the characteristic palette of mid-century Hamadan weaving traditions.

Owning a vintage rug from this era means preserving a fragment of regional textile heritage. It represents an authentic connection to historical craft skills that prioritise durability, natural materials, and timeless visual appeal over mass production.

This rug is entirely handmade using traditional hand-knotted techniques passed down through generations in Persia. Every single knot is tied by hand by skilled artisans, involving hundreds of thousands of individual gestures that require immense patience and precision.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2 spread across its 192 x 130 cm dimensions, the creation of this rug represents a massive investment of human time and artisanal skill, resulting in a robust foundation and a richly textured surface.

Weighing 8.7 kg, the substantial construction reflects the heavy-duty quality of natural materials and tight knotting, ensuring the rug stays securely in place on your floor.
