Hamadan PatinaHand KnottedRug

Brown / BlackRunner109 x 400 cm

The Hamadan region in the Middle East is celebrated for its diverse and prolific weaving tradition. Unlike many other regions that focus on a single, rigid style, Hamadan is home to hundreds of villages, each contributing its own variations to the craft. This creates a rich tapestry of designs where traditional patterns are constantly reinterpreted by local weavers.

The technical term 'hand-knotted' refers to the process where each individual strand of wool is tied onto the foundation threads. This creates a dense, pile-rich surface that is both luxurious to the touch and incredibly hard-wearing. This construction method allows for the level of detail and colour blending that makes this runner stand out as a premium piece of decor.

Signature elements of this tradition often include a central medallion or a repeated geometric motif, typically framed by a decorative border. These patterns are deeply rooted in the local cultural vocabulary, often passed down through generations. The use of varied, earthy colours like those found in this runner is a hallmark of the region, designed to bring warmth and vitality to the home.

Collecting rugs from this tradition is an investment in human skill and regional heritage. These pieces are valued not only for their aesthetic beauty but for the stories they tell about the communities where they were created. Owning one means participating in a centuries-old practice of textile artistry that values quality and individuality above all else.

This runner is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate weeks of focused effort to its creation. By tying each individual knot by hand, the weaver ensures a level of structural integrity and pattern precision that remains unmatched by any machine. This labour-intensive process is what gives the rug its distinct, dense pile and long-term durability.

The construction of this 15.3 kg piece reflects the high volume of material and effort invested in its making. A runner of this size and weight demonstrates a substantial density, which is a testament to the quality and the time taken to build such a robust foundation. This weight is a key indicator of the care and human skill poured into every square centimetre of the rug.

The precision of the knotting process allows for the sharp definition of the geometric motifs seen throughout the runner. Because every knot is placed with intent, the resulting pile is dense enough to withstand years of regular use while maintaining its shape and visual clarity. This is a functional work of art that rewards its owner with both beauty and long-lasting performance.
