Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / BlackRunner84 x 195 cm

Bokhara rugs trace their design roots back to the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, where nomadic and village weavers developed a distinctive geometric visual language. Over generations, the tradition migrated southward, and today some of the finest examples of these classic designs are carefully crafted by experienced artisans in Pakistan.

The designation 3ply refers to the construction of the pile, which is spun using three distinct strands of wool twisted together. This multi-ply method yields a thicker, heavier, and exceptionally resilient yarn that enhances the natural lustre of the wool and ensures the rug withstands heavy foot traffic.

Signature design elements of the Bokhara tradition include the iconic repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot medallions arranged in neat rows across the red field. These central symbols are typically framed by precise geometric borders that reflect centuries of design continuity.

Collecting rugs from this respected heritage tradition means valuing enduring skill and cultural continuity. Owning a piece like this represents a connection to centuries of textile artistry, bringing genuine heritage and enduring tactile quality into a modern home.

This runner is entirely handmade through a meticulous hand-knotted technique, representing weeks and months of dedicated work by skilled artisans. With approximately 26,000 individual knots tied by hand across its 195 x 84 cm surface, every single knot contributes to the structural integrity and dense pile quality of the piece.

Weighing 5.1 kg, the substantial weight reflects the heavy-duty density of the construction and the generous amount of natural wool invested in the foundation. This intensive level of human labour and material investment ensures a durable, well-anchored rug designed to withstand everyday living.
