Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / BlackRunner78 x 302 cm

Bokhara rugs trace their design roots back along the ancient Silk Road to the historic Central Asian city of Bukhara, famous for its rich textile traditions. Over time, master weavers migrated and established thriving weaving communities in regions such as Pakistan, where these classic motifs continue to be perfected with exceptional skill.

The designation 3ply refers to the construction of the yarn, where three separate strands of wool are twisted together before knotting. This multi-strand yarn creates a thicker, sturdier, and more lustrous pile than standard single-ply wool, providing both greater longevity and a richer texture underfoot.

The visual hallmark of this tradition is the repeating gul motif, an octagonal or elephant-foot medallion arranged in neat rows across the field. Enclosed by precise geometric borders, these motifs reflect a heritage of symmetry and order that has remained popular in homes across the world for centuries.

Rugs from this tradition are deeply valued by collectors and interior enthusiasts for their blend of cultural history and enduring practicality. Owning one means welcoming a piece of authentic artisan heritage into your home, crafted with a level of human skill and patience that modern industrial methods cannot match.

This runner is entirely handmade using traditional hand-knotted techniques passed down through generations in Pakistan. Every single knot is tied individually by hand onto the foundation, requiring immense patience, steady hands, and deep craft knowledge from the artisan.

Creating a rug of this size with a density of 160,000 knots per m2 involves tying hundreds of thousands of individual knots by hand. This meticulous process takes many months of dedicated daily work, resulting in a robust structure and a dense, luxurious pile that simply cannot be replicated by machines.

Weighing 7.3 kg across its 302 x 78 cm dimensions, this piece contains a substantial amount of natural material packed tightly into its construction. This weight is a direct indicator of the dense knotting and heavy-duty craftsmanship invested into making a floor covering built to last a lifetime.
