Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / BlackRunner77 x 187 cm

Bokhara rugs draw their evocative name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a legendary trading hub where nomadic and settled weaving traditions met and intertwined. Over generations, master weavers carried these distinct patterns across borders, establishing vibrant new centres of artistry in Pakistan, where the craft found a welcoming home and flourished.

The 3ply designation in this rug means the pile is crafted using three individual strands of wool twisted together before knotting. This specialised multi-strand construction yields a thicker, heavier, and more resilient pile than standard single-ply methods, giving the surface a distinct lustre and ensuring it withstands the test of time.

The defining visual signature of this tradition is the repeating gul motif, an octagonal or elephant-foot medallion arranged in precise rows across the field. Enclosed by careful geometric borders, these motifs reflect a deep cultural heritage of symmetry and storytelling, rendered here in rich red tones that anchor the room.

Collecting a rug from this heritage tradition means preserving centuries of specialised skill and human artistry. It represents an investment in genuine craftsmanship that connects your living space to a long, respected lineage of textile makers.

This runner is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who spend months meticulously tying each individual knot by hand. With a density of 160,000 knots per m2 distributed across its 187 x 77 cm dimensions, the creation of this piece requires approximately 230,000 hand-tied knots and countless hours of focused labour.

Weighing 4.5 kg, the runner reflects a dense construction and a generous use of quality wool material. This meticulous hand-knotting technique ensures that the foundation and pile are tightly integrated, resulting in the structural integrity and longevity expected from fine traditional rug-making.
