Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Black / BrownRunner80 x 241 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, historically a major trading hub for tribal carpets. Over centuries, weaving families migrated and established new roots, and today some of the finest examples of this tradition are crafted in Pakistan.

The 2ply designation in this rug means the pile is woven using two strands of wool twisted together before knotting. This technique produces a denser, more resilient, and longer-lasting pile compared to single-ply construction, ensuring the rug retains its plush feel and appearance over time.

Traditional Bokhara design is famous for its repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot shaped medallions arranged in orderly rows. While traditional versions often feature a deep red field, this unique piece showcases a striking black background that offers a contemporary twist on a classic Middle Eastern design.

Collecting and living with a Bokhara rug connects your home to centuries of textile heritage. Owning a piece crafted with this level of skill and tradition means preserving a living craft that celebrates human patience and artistic expression.

This runner is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Pakistan, representing months of meticulous and dedicated labour. With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the artisans have individually tied approximately 482,000 knots across the 241 by 80 cm dimensions of the rug.

Weighing 4.8 kg, this piece demonstrates a dense and substantial construction that speaks directly to the quality of the materials and the effort invested in its creation. Every single knot is placed by hand, a traditional method that no machine can replicate.

This level of hand-knotting requires exceptional precision and patience, resulting in a robust structure with a thick 13 mm pile that will maintain its integrity and appearance over years of daily use.
