Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Brown / Beige248 x 260 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a historical hub for trade and craftsmanship. While the designs have their roots in the nomadic traditions of the region, the finest examples today are meticulously woven in Pakistan, where the craft has been refined and perfected over generations.

The term 2ply refers to the construction of the pile, where two strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted. This technical approach is crucial for quality, as it produces a pile that is not only denser and more lustrous but also significantly more durable, allowing the rug to maintain its appearance through years of use.

Signature design elements of the Bokhara tradition include the repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot shaped medallions arranged in precise rows. These are typically enclosed by complex, formal borders that frame the field, creating a sense of balance and harmony that is instantly recognisable to collectors.

Owning a hand-knotted rug from this tradition is an investment in cultural history and artisanal skill. These pieces are valued for their ability to bridge the gap between ancient design languages and modern living, offering a sense of heritage that brings depth and soul to any contemporary interior.

This rug is created through a rigorous hand-knotted process that reflects hundreds of hours of dedicated labour by skilled artisans. Each individual knot is tied by hand, a methodical technique that ensures the rug's structural integrity and long-term durability.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the construction of this 260 x 248 cm piece represents a significant investment of human effort and precision. This high knot count is the hallmark of a premium rug, providing the foundation for the detailed patterns and the dense, resilient pile that defines its quality.

The substantial weight of 16.1 kg further speaks to the amount of high-quality wool used in its creation. This density not only contributes to the rug's luxurious feel but also ensures it remains stable and firm on the floor, showcasing the superior craftsmanship required to produce such a substantial and well-made textile.
