Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black198 x 208 cm

The Bokhara rug tradition is deeply rooted in the history of Central Asian nomadic tribes, though the finest examples today are primarily woven in Pakistan. These rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara, which served as a central trading hub where these exquisite textiles were once exchanged and admired by travellers from across the globe.

The term 2ply refers to the specific way the wool is prepared for the loom. By twisting two individual strands together, the artisan creates a yarn that is more durable and visually lustrous than standard single-ply wool. This technical detail is what gives the rug its signature sheen and ensures that the pile remains dense and soft even after years of use in a busy home.

Design-wise, these rugs are celebrated for their repeating gul motifs, which are stylised, octagonal medallions often resembling elephant footprints. These are framed by intricate, multi-layered borders that demonstrate a high level of geometric precision. The deep red colour palette is a hallmark of the tradition, symbolising warmth and prosperity in the cultures from which these patterns originated.

Owning a Bokhara rug is an investment in a storied craft tradition that has been passed down through generations. Collectors value these pieces not only for their aesthetic consistency but for the human skill required to translate such complex, repeating designs into a finished textile. By choosing this rug, you are preserving a piece of cultural heritage that brings both history and artistic excellence into your living space.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense skill and dedication from the weaver. With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the creation of this specific 208 x 198 cm piece represents hundreds of hours of focused labour. This high knot count is the hallmark of its quality, resulting in a crispness of pattern and a dense, resilient pile that is built to endure.

The use of a 2ply construction for the wool pile is a deliberate choice that enhances the rug's performance. By twisting two strands of wool together before knotting, the pile becomes significantly more robust and lustrous than single-ply alternatives. This technique not only improves the longevity of the rug but also creates a more consistent and deep pile that feels substantial and premium to the touch.

With a total weight of 10.3 kg, the rug demonstrates the generous amount of high-quality material invested in its construction. This weight is a direct indicator of the density of the knots and the strength of the foundation, ensuring that the rug will lay flat and maintain its shape over time. Every inch of this piece reflects a commitment to traditional craft that prioritises both beauty and long-term functional value.
