Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Beige139 x 205 cm

Bokhara rugs trace their design roots back to the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, where nomadic and village weavers developed distinctive repeating motifs. Over generations, these weaving traditions migrated southward, finding a thriving home in Pakistan, where master artisans continue the craft with remarkable skill.

The 2ply designation refers to the construction method where two strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted into the foundation. This technique produces a stronger, denser, and more lustrous pile compared to single-ply yarns, improving both the durability and the rich appearance of the rug.

The visual language of this tradition is defined by the repeating gul motif, an octagonal or elephant-foot medallion arranged in neat rows across the field. Enclosed by structured borders, these geometric patterns represent centuries of design heritage passed down through families of makers.

Owning a hand-knotted Bokhara connects your home to a long lineage of textile artistry. It is a piece valued by collectors and homemakers alike for its cultural weight, enduring materials, and the sheer human dedication required to bring it to life.

This rug is entirely handmade through traditional hand-knotted techniques by skilled artisans in Pakistan. Knotting each intersection by hand requires immense patience, precision, and weeks of dedicated labour to complete a piece of this size.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the rug reaches a total count of approximately 713,000 individually tied knots. This high knot count guarantees exceptional durability, a firm and upright pile, and remarkable clarity in every geometric motif.

Weighing 7.1 kg, the substantial construction reflects the dense amount of natural wool and tight knotting invested into the foundation, ensuring a quality and longevity that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.
