Berber Moroccan - Mid Atlas VintageHand KnottedWool rug
Black / Dark red170 x 243 cm

Berber Moroccan - A Bold Statement for Your Home

This vintage Berber rug from the Mid Atlas region is a truly one-of-a-kind piece, featuring a striking hand-knotted checkered pattern that brings authentic Moroccan character to any room.
Discover the warmth and authentic charm of this vintage Berber rug, sourced directly from the rugged Mid Atlas mountains of Morocco. As a one-of-a-kind piece, this rug carries a distinct personality that cannot be replicated, ensuring that your home features a design element that is entirely your own.
The rug is crafted from high-quality Wool, offering a soft, tactile experience underfoot that adds genuine comfort to your living space. With a plush 16 mm pile, it provides excellent sound absorption and natural insulation, making it an ideal choice for creating a cosy atmosphere in bedrooms or living areas.
The vibrant, high-contrast checkered pattern serves as a bold focal point, grounded by the rich natural tones characteristic of traditional Moroccan weaving. Because each piece is individual and vintage, the slight variations in the weave and colour reflect the human touch and the history embedded in the fibres.
Investing in this vintage rug means embracing a piece with a story. Its durability and timeless design ensure that it will remain a cherished part of your interior for years to come, maturing beautifully as it continues to be used in your home.
Berber rugs are deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the indigenous people of Morocco, particularly those living in the Atlas Mountains. These rugs were traditionally woven by women for domestic use, serving as warm bedding or floor coverings to protect against the harsh mountain winters.
The term Beni Ourain refers to the tribes of the Middle Atlas, known for their specific weaving traditions and the use of high-quality, long-staple Wool. These rugs are highly valued for their minimalist yet expressive designs, which often incorporate symbolic motifs that reflect the weaver's personal history, their environment, and their beliefs.
While many traditional Berber rugs are known for their cream-coloured fields with dark geometric lines, this piece stands out with its bold, rhythmic checkered pattern. This variation illustrates the creative freedom within the tradition, where weavers often adapt classic structures to showcase their own artistic vision while maintaining the essential techniques passed down through generations.
Owning a vintage Berber rug is an invitation to connect with a storied craft tradition. These pieces are collected worldwide not only for their aesthetic appeal but for their historical significance and the tangible sense of heritage they bring into a modern home.
This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that reflects the deep-rooted skills of Moroccan artisans. Each knot is placed individually by hand, requiring significant time and precision to build the robust foundation that gives this piece its substantial 12.4 kg weight.
The construction quality is evident in the density and texture of the Wool, which has been carefully selected for its resilience. By eschewing industrial methods, this handmade approach ensures a level of structural integrity and character that machines simply cannot replicate, resulting in a floor covering that is as durable as it is beautiful.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
