Berber rugs originate from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, where they have been crafted for centuries by indigenous tribes. These rugs were traditionally made for personal use as sleeping mats or blankets, serving as a vital source of warmth against the harsh mountain climate.

The construction of these rugs is deeply rooted in ancient customs, using techniques passed down through generations of families. The Wool is often hand-spun and dyed using natural pigments, which gives each rug its distinctive character and subtle variations in colour that you will not find in mass-produced items.

The design of this particular piece draws inspiration from the classic patchwork style, which allows for a more modern and artistic interpretation of traditional Berber aesthetics. While these rugs were historically known for their simple, minimalist patterns, contemporary versions often play with vibrant colours and geometric shapes, reflecting the creativity and personal expression of the individual weaver.

Collecting a Berber rug is an invitation to bring a piece of cultural heritage into your daily life. They are highly valued not only for their beauty but for the skill and history embodied in every fibre, representing a tangible connection to the ancient traditions of the Moroccan landscape.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate significant time to each piece. The process begins with the careful selection of natural Wool, which is then woven to create a dense, resilient pile that defines its premium feel and lasting durability.

Given its substantial size of 395 x 308 cm and a weight of 36.5 kg, this rug represents a significant investment of human skill and effort. The density of the Wool and the precision of the hand-knotting process mean that every square inch has been painstakingly constructed to ensure the rug maintains its shape and beauty over time.

The labour-intensive nature of this craft is reflected in the rug’s weight and density, which provide a grounded and secure feel in any interior. By choosing this piece, you are supporting a time-honoured tradition of craftsmanship where every knot tells a story of patience and dedication.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
