Black / Dark redRunner128 x 285 cm

The Baluch rugs originate from the nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes residing in the border regions of Afghanistan and the Middle East. These rugs are deeply connected to the desert lifestyle, historically woven by artisans who developed their own distinct visual language while moving across the landscape. The migration of these weaving traditions has allowed them to evolve while maintaining the core techniques that define their character.

The term 'Baluch' refers to these specific tribal weaving traditions, which are known for their focus on durability and intricate geometric detail. The rugs are typically crafted with a sturdy foundation that allows them to withstand the rigours of nomadic life, a quality that translates perfectly to modern homes. The use of natural materials and traditional dyes gives these pieces a depth of colour that ages gracefully.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their rich, dark palettes and repeating geometric motifs, such as the medallion patterns seen here. The borders are often filled with stylised floral or tribal symbols that reflect the weaver's environment and cultural heritage. While red is a classic choice for this tradition, the specific interplay of dark and light tones in this piece creates a sophisticated look that anchors a room.

Owning a piece from this tradition is about more than just decor; it is an appreciation of a heritage that values individual skill and cultural storytelling. These rugs are highly sought after by collectors who value the balance between artistic expression and practical utility. By bringing one into your space, you are preserving a craft tradition that remains a testament to human ingenuity and artistic endurance.

This runner is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who have honed their craft over generations. The construction process is incredibly labour-intensive, requiring a high level of precision to ensure the structural integrity of the piece. Every individual knot is tied by hand, resulting in a robust and dense pile that is built to last for many years.

With a weight of 9.8 kg spread across its 285 x 128 cm dimensions, this rug demonstrates a high material density that speaks to the quality of its construction. This weight is a direct result of the hours of dedicated labour required to pack the wool tightly onto the foundation. This density not only enhances the rug's durability but also ensures that the intricate patterns remain sharp and well-defined over time.
