BakhtiariHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown207 x 300 cm

The Bakhtiari rug takes its name from the nomadic Bakhtiari tribes of the Zagros Mountains in the Middle East. Historically, these tribes developed a distinct style of weaving that reflects their rugged environment and rich cultural heritage, often incorporating motifs inspired by the natural landscape and gardens of their ancestral lands.

Technical quality in these rugs is defined by the use of high-quality wool, which is known for its natural strength and ability to hold vibrant dyes over generations. The traditional hand-knotting process creates a tight, dense pile that is both flexible and incredibly durable, allowing the rug to remain a functional part of the home for decades.

The signature design of the Bakhtiari tradition often features the garden or 'khesti' motif, where the field is divided into compartments filled with floral or tree designs. While this rug follows a more formal medallion layout, it retains the characteristic richness of colour and the dense, rhythmic patterning that defines the regional aesthetic.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in cultural continuity. These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their blend of artistic expression and technical skill, representing a legacy of craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations of tribal weavers.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to each piece. The process begins with the careful preparation of the foundation, ensuring that every knot is tied with precision to create a resilient and long-lasting structure.

With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the rug achieves a fine level of detail and a plush, consistent pile. This high knot count is a testament to the artisan's expertise, resulting in a robust surface that is built to withstand everyday use while preserving the clarity of its complex patterns.

The total construction reflects a deep commitment to traditional methods, where the weight and density of the final piece are a direct result of the hours invested in its creation. This labour-intensive craft produces a rug that is both substantial in weight and refined in its visual presentation.
