BakhtiariHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown170 x 295 cm

Bakhtiar rugs originate from the mountainous regions of the Middle East, where they are traditionally crafted by the Bakhtiari tribe. These rugs are deeply rooted in the nomadic and semi-nomadic heritage of the region, reflecting a culture that has long valued the integration of functional art into daily life.

The craftsmanship behind these pieces is defined by a commitment to durability and local tradition. The Wool used is sourced from sheep grazing in high-altitude pastures, resulting in a lanolin-rich fibre that is naturally resilient and lustrous. This material quality is essential to the longevity that these rugs are famous for.

The signature design of a Bakhtiar rug often features the Khesti pattern, which consists of a series of repeating garden compartments. Each of these segments typically contains stylised floral or animal motifs, creating a lush, organised field that represents the traditional garden. These designs are enclosed by wide, ornate borders that frame the narrative within.

Collectors value these rugs for their ability to tell a story through their intricate, symbolic imagery. Owning a Bakhtiar piece is a way to connect with a centuries-old tradition of weaving, representing a commitment to preserving the skill and artistic vision of the weavers who have kept this vibrant craft alive through generations.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to each individual piece. With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the construction process is incredibly labour-intensive, requiring a high degree of precision to ensure the complex patterns are perfectly defined throughout the entire surface.

The substantial weight of 19.1 kg is a testament to the quality of the materials used and the density of the weave. This weight not only provides the rug with a stable, flat lay but also indicates a robust construction that will maintain its integrity and beauty despite years of use in your home.

Every knot is placed by hand, a traditional technique that allows for the creation of intricate designs that machines simply cannot replicate. This slow, deliberate process is what gives the rug its durability and character, ensuring that the final product is as strong as it is visually striking.
