Afghan Khal MohammadiHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red125 x 194 cm

The Khal Mohammadi is one of the most respected and recognisable styles originating from the weaving traditions of Afghanistan. Named after the legendary Turkmen weaver who first developed the specific aesthetic, these rugs are celebrated for their sophisticated use of deep, saturated colours and precise geometric layouts.

The term Khal Mohammadi refers to a specific design language that prioritises a deep, dark red base, often referred to as the 'Afghan red.' This colour is achieved through traditional dyeing methods that have been passed down through generations, creating a palette that feels both earthy and regal.

The signature design elements of a Khal Mohammadi include the repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal medallions that represent tribal identity and protection. These are framed by intricate, structured borders that ground the pattern and give the rug its formal, balanced appearance, distinguishing it from more nomadic or free-form tribal styles.

Owning a Khal Mohammadi is an invitation to connect with a long lineage of craft. These rugs are highly valued by collectors not only for their visual depth but for the immense skill required to produce them. By bringing one into your home, you are preserving a piece of cultural heritage that honours the dedication of the artisans who keep this ancient practice alive.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process requiring immense patience and precision. Skilled artisans spend countless hours meticulously placing every single knot to build the foundation and pattern, resulting in a level of durability and detail that simply cannot be achieved through machine-made methods.

With a construction density of 90,000 knots per m2, the creation of this specific 194 x 125 cm piece represents a significant investment of time and human effort. This density ensures the rug remains resilient over time and allows the complex geometric design to appear crisp and well-defined.

The 7.5 kg weight of this rug is a testament to the generous use of quality materials and the tight, robust nature of its knotting. By choosing a hand-knotted piece, you are supporting a labour-intensive craft tradition that prioritises longevity and exceptional build quality over mass production.
