Afghan FineHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black98 x 146 cm

Rugs from Afghanistan carry forward a rich weaving heritage deeply rooted in the daily lives and cultural traditions of Middle Eastern artisan communities. Afghan weavers have honed their craft over generations, passing down techniques for working with local wool and natural dyes from parent to child.

The Afghan Fine designation points to a refined approach to traditional hand-knotting. In this style, artisans use finely spun wool to build a denser and more resilient pile, creating a tactile surface that balances softness with long-lasting structural integrity.

The visual language of these rugs typically features repeating geometric motifs, medallion patterns, and traditional borders framed by earthy red fields. Each motif often reflects the specific tribal history and local surroundings of the weavers who designed it.

Collecting a rug from this region means owning a piece of living cultural heritage. The immense skill and time invested in each piece represent a tradition of craftsmanship that values durability, beauty, and authenticity above all else.

This rug is entirely handmade using a traditional hand-knotted technique. Skilled artisans invest months of careful manual labour, tying each individual knot by hand to build the dense wool foundation.

With a total area of approximately 1.43 m2 and a knot density of 90,000 knots per m2, the rug contains roughly 128,700 individual hand-tied knots. This meticulous process requires immense patience and precision, ensuring the pattern remains sharp and the pile exceptionally durable.

Weighing 4.4 kg, the substantial construction reflects the generous amount of natural wool and human effort invested in its creation. This careful craftsmanship ensures a durable rug built to withstand everyday life while retaining its soft, cushiony feel.
