Black / Dark redRunner79 x 283 cm

Afghan Akhche rugs are steeped in the rich weaving traditions of northern Afghanistan, where nomadic and village weavers have passed down their skills through generations. These rugs represent a vital part of the region's cultural fabric, reflecting the nomadic lifestyle and the enduring appeal of traditional tribal designs.

The term Akhche refers to a specific style of weaving known for its robust construction and distinctive geometric patterns. Woven by hand using local wool, these pieces are celebrated for their durability and honest, rustic charm, making them highly practical choices for everyday use.

The design of this runner is characterised by repeating gul motifs, which are stylized octagonal medallions traditional to Turkmen and Afghan weaving. These central motifs are framed by multiple decorative borders, creating a structured and harmonious composition that has remained popular for centuries.

Beyond their functional use, these hand-knotted creations are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their authenticity and connection to ancient nomadic cultures. Acquiring an Afghan Akhche runner brings a piece of Central Asian history into the modern home, celebrating a craft that has survived unchanged for generations.

This runner is hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, a process requiring immense patience and precision. Every single knot is tied individually by hand, demonstrating a level of craftsmanship that modern machinery simply cannot replicate.

Weighing 6.9 kg for its 283 x 79 cm size, this piece features a dense and substantial construction. The weight of the runner is a direct reflection of the generous amount of wool used and the tight packing of the knots, ensuring a solid structure that lies flat and secure on your floor.

The creation of a runner of this length represents weeks of dedicated daily labour. From preparing the wool to the final shearing, the entire process is guided by human hands, resulting in a durable and highly individual piece that carries the story of its maker.
