Afghan FineHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown201 x 283 cm

Afghan rug weaving is steeped in centuries of nomadic and village traditions, with the Akhche region being particularly renowned for producing robust, deeply expressive designs. These rugs traditionally served as essential household items, crafted to withstand the harsh climates of the Central Asian steppes while telling stories of regional identity.

The term Akhche refers to a specific style of weaving known for its sturdy construction and rich, warm colour palettes. By using hand-spun wool, weavers create a pile that naturally varies in tone, giving the finished piece a beautiful depth and a lively, organic texture.

This rug features the iconic gul motif, a repeating octagonal medallion that is a signature of Turkmen and Afghan design heritage. Arranged in structured rows and enclosed by formal, multi-layered borders, these geometric elements create a sense of balance and harmony.

Owning an Afghan Akhche rug connects you to a living heritage of craftsmanship passed down through generations. Highly valued for their durability and classic aesthetic, these rugs are cherished by collectors and homeowners alike for their ability to bring history and warmth into modern living spaces.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, a process requiring immense patience and precision. Every single knot is tied individually by hand, creating a robust structure that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.

Weighing a substantial 17.6 kg for its 283 x 201 cm size, the rug reflects an incredibly dense and heavy construction. This weight is a direct result of the generous amount of wool used and the tightness of the weave, ensuring the pile remains upright and resilient over years of use.

The creation of a piece this size represents months of dedicated daily labour. By choosing a hand-knotted rug, you are supporting a traditional craft heritage and acquiring a durable piece of functional art built to last for generations.
