Small bedroom rugs

60 x 90 cm and 80 x 120 cm are the two bedside sizes to choose between. Pick one that runs along most of the mattress, so you land on it whichever way you get up. In a smaller room, a single rug on the side you use most is usually enough.

No. Under 160 cm, a rug won’t reach past both sides of a double or king, so most of it stays hidden beneath the bed. For a visible border to step onto, you need a medium (160–229 cm) or large (230–349 cm) bedroom rug. Small sizes work beside, in front of, or at the foot of the bed.

A matching pair, one on each side, is the usual answer for a double bed. It puts softness where you step without covering the floor. Buy them at the same time if you want a close match, as shades can differ slightly between batches, particularly on handwoven designs.

Wool is still the best all-rounder, but at smaller sizes pile height matters more than on a large bedroom rug: with less surface area to make an impression, a high-pile or shaggy wool does more of the work to make the space feel soft and finished. Cotton is a good lightweight, washable option if you want to swap it out often — easier to manage at this size. Jute holds its shape well for a small accent rug, but keep it away from the exact spot your feet land getting out of bed; it’s better used at the foot of the bed or beside a nightstand than as the main step-out rug.

It can. A small bedroom rug has less weight holding it down and takes a sideways push every morning. An anti-slip underlay keeps it in place and adds some cushioning.
